Diatomaceous Earth for Flea Control

Fleas can be one of the most annoying aspects of owning a pet. Fortunately, there is a safe and effective way to deal with them.

Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring substance formed from the shells of diatoms, a type of algae. Diatoms’ silicon shells fall off when they die and fossilize in the earth. Taking this earth and grinding it into a powder consistency produces a chemical-free alternative for flea control.

Fleas have a waxy outer layer that prevents water loss. Diatomaceous earth works to kill fleas by scrubbing against this layer, effectively slicing through it, and dehydrating them.

In addition, because it works through physical means instead of chemical poisoning, fleas can not build a tolerance to it. Where other products can create super fleas that become increasingly difficult to deal with, diatomaceous earth won’t.

Safety is another reason diatomaceous earth is a great choice for flea control. It’s non-toxic, environmentally friendly and it is completely safe for your pets, family and your home because there are no harsh chemicals or synthetic materials.

That said, it is important to make sure to buy the right kind of diatomaceous earth. Don’t ever use the type intended for swimming pools. It is chemically treated and is extremely hazardous. Instead, always use a natural or food grade diatomaceous earth.

Using Diatomaceous Earth Indoors

For indoor use, we highly recommend Only Natural Pet All-In-One Flea Powder. Massage the powder into your pet’s fur carefully, avoiding his eyes and mouth area. Vacuum your carpets and then sprinkle the carpets with it. You should also put some in you vacuum bag to kill any live bugs that you vacuumed. Sprinkle some on your pet’s bedding, around baseboards and anything else that your pet comes in contact with. Depending on the severity of the infestation, you may need to reapply in 3-8 weeks.

Using Diatomaceous Earth for the Yard

A good product to use outside is GreenSense Diatomaceous Earth, which is available in up to 50 lb bags. Spread it around the foundation and entry points of your home. Dust it onto your lawn and other areas that your animals frequent. Fleas tend like shady and moist areas so be sure to keep your yard clear of debris.

We’ve had so much success with these products that we guarantee using diatomaceous earth will bring you positive results in less than 72 hours. Also, when combined with other flea control methods, the result is an extremely well rounded flea control plan that can overcome even the worst infestations.
